Conclusion
In essence, the works on this CD present opposites in approach, execution, mood, and meaning. The sorrow gravitas of “Erbarme Dich” offers a heady contrast to the ecstasy of “Ständchen,” likewise the diversity seen among the nightmarish Gaspard de la nuit, the orchestral and dramatic Norma Fantasy, and Mozart’s intimate sonata. Yet these compositions all rely on the piano as an instrument of the voice and a creator of song; the percussive piano is not to be found here. More importantly, these compositions share a potent sense of creative and communicative vitality, reminding us all of the matchless force of artistic vision.
