Hell and Heaven
Greg writes:
Spirituality and religion are powerful forces. I see them perpetuate so much love ... and so much hate in this world. It's too big for me to understand. Nevertheless, it is an overwhelming inspiration for me and countless other artists.
Etude No. 13: "The Devil's Staircase" by Gyorgy Ligeti
Etude No. 13 - "The Devil's Staircase," composed by the late Gyorgy Ligeti, presents a not-so-subtle vision of hell. The pianist and the listeners embark upon an endless quest to climb the staircases out of hell. The harder and faster you climb, the more hell sucks you back in.
...and everywhere are the maddening bells, coming from every-which way, like bombs.
One could make any number of analogies comparing this piece to the world in which we live today. Try to come up with your own...
"Sheep May Safely Graze" from Cantata No. 208, by J. S. Bach / Petri
The musical inverse of "The Devil's Staircase," "Sheep May Safely Graze" (composed by J.S. Bach and transcribed for piano by Egon Petri) presents a world of security, peace, love, forgiveness ... heaven, if you will. Regardless of your beliefs, you will likely find it to be intensely beautiful music.
