700-word bio

GREG ANDERSON: twenty-six-year-old pianist, composer, and scholar.
HIS MISSION: to demonstrate that classical piano music can serve as a relevant and powerful force in society.

The zeal with which Greg pursues his mission has led him to develop a multi-faceted career in the arts. His exploits have garnered the attention of such media outlets as MTV’s Total Request Live, the CBS Early Morning Show, Pianist and Clavier magazines, and NPR’s A Prairie Home Companion, From the Top, Performance Today, and All Things Considered.

Greg has soloed with such orchestras as the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, the Juilliard Orchestra, the Aspen Concert Orchestra, the Millennium Orchestra in Spain, the Minnesota Sinfonia, and the Mississippi Valley Symphony. He has performed at the Banff Keyboard Festival, Pianofest in the Hamptons, the Aspen Music Festival, and the Bowdoin Summer Music Festival, and he has presented solo recitals all over North America. Greg’s competition credits include top prizes in the Clara Wells National Scholarship Auditions, the Juilliard Concerto Competition, the Corpus Christi International Piano Competition, the Lee National Piano Competition, the MTNA-Yamaha Piano Competition, and the Schubert Club Piano Competition.

Greg is also an avid chamber musician and performs regularly with his piano duo partner Elizabeth Joy Roe; they are known worldwide for their revolutionary four-hand piano technique and adrenalized performances, and they released their debut CD, "Reimagine," earlier this year. The duo has presented innovative concerts in every New York City venue imaginable: from Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall, and Steinway Hall, to children's hospitals, HIV/AIDS homes, and cancer centers. In 2001 and 2002, Greg toured America and Japan with violinist Karen Gomyo.

Greg has been named the "Composer of the Year" by the Minnesota Music Educators Association and has twice been a winner in the Juilliard Composition Contests. Several of his compositions and arrangements for The 5 Browns have appeared on the EMI and Sony/BMG record labels, and the latest album, "Browns in Blue," spent several weeks atop Billboard magazine’s classical music charts. Greg's first composition for The 5 Browns was premiered at the Rose Bowl on July 4th, 2006 in front of 57,000 people. Also in 2006, Greg filled in for John Williams on Juilliard's “Cinema Serenades” concert in Alice Tully Hall for which Greg composed “Star Wars Fantasy: Four Impressions for Two Pianos."

Greg made a significant impact at The Juilliard School where he received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. He helped to create and organize “Life Between the Keys,” a concert featuring the 15 members of the Juilliard Piano Class of 2004. An all-American program, it chronicled the class’ Juilliard experience together and celebrated their unique camaraderie through music, outfits, and dialogue. He also was a member of the school’s Community Service Fellowship in which he and two actors presented interactive performances in underprivileged New York City venues. Upon graduating, he was awarded Scholastic Distinction for his 275-page thesis, which “overwhelmed!” even the noted piano repertoire pedagogue Joseph Bloch. He is currently transforming the paper into a book. As a student at the school, he was asked to perform concerts for the board of directors, for donors, the “Friends of the Library,” and “Women for Women of the United Nations;” he also soloed with the Juilliard Orchestra and performed on the Carnegie Hall concert entitled “Juilliard Young Artists and Their Mentors.”

As an actor, Greg Anderson made his Broadway debut in 2005 playing the role of “Vernon Duke” in the musical Misia at New York City’s 42nd Street Playwright Horizons.

In the upcoming year, Greg is scheduled to perform dozens of recitals across the United States and complete several more commissions for The 5 Browns. Additionally, he has been invited to present at the 2008 EG (Entertainment Gathering) in Monterey, California.

Mr. Anderson began the piano at age eight and was a student of Kim Craig for eleven years at the Saint Paul Conservatory of Music. He studied with Julian Martin at The Juilliard School as a Jack Kent Cooke Scholar, where he received his Bachelor and Master of Music degrees in Piano Performance, graduating with scholastic distinction. He is currently a doctorate student at Yale University as a student of Peter Frankl. He also pursues studies with Aiko Onishi in California.

Greg’s book-in-progress, The Art and Evolution of Piano Recital Programming, articulates his plan to demonstrate that classical piano music can serve as a relevant and powerful force in society. Greg believes that a piano recital offers means to the overwhelming beauty, spiritual essence, and humanity in this world.
